Curio 7 - "Right-Sided Spades"
composed by Leigh Matheson (2011)
The contract is four spades by North-South.
This was the winner in a competition devised by Richard Pavlicek (see here) investigating the maximum difference in the number of tricks available to a partnership in a suit contract, depending on who is the declarer. Here South as declarer makes nine tricks on a club lead ruffed in dummy but North can't make any tricks at all when East, on lead, draws trumps and leads a club. So the "right-sided difference" is nine.
